  Overview
When the program started Clipper was the only variety cultivated, and cultivated very successfully, in the Southern Cape.

Nine varieties have since been released from our breeding program in the two growing regions - S5 (temporary code) at the beginning of 2010. Five varieties, SSG 525 (2003), SSG 532 (2004), SSG 506 (2008), S02-11 (2009) and SSG 585 (2011), has already been phased out for various reasons. So,four local varieties are cultivated this season. Five experimental varieties ( S6, S9, S12, Marthe and Cristalia) will be evaluated this year.
